Service Overview
This service is used to request local administrator rights be added on a University computer once you have submitted the appropriate form. This security standard is to comply with new governmental security requirements as well as cybersecurity insurance requirements.
This is NOT the service to use for asking questions, requesting modifications, or reporting issues related to Admin by Request. Use the Request assistance with Admin By Request service instead.
How to know if you qualify for local administrator rights
To receive local administrator rights, your job duties must include running diagnostic software, updating/patching computer programs, researching installation requirements, ensuring software is high quality, managing software licensing, or uninstalling unused programs.
Submitting a local administrator rights certification form
All employees who have job duties that require local administrator rights must submit a justification that has been approved by their unit head/supervisor. For example, faculty may require local administrator rights for scholarship and research. The justification must be detailed enough to adequately describe an employee's need for local administrator rights and will be reviewed by the Office of the CIO security group for approval.
Requesting installation of Admin by Request (ABR)
Admin By Request (ABR) is typically the program used to control local admnistrator access on MSU machines. Various other units on campus also support the ABR software package. Once you have completed your certification form, you can request installation of ABR using this service page.
