Canvas: Statistics and Reports FAQ

1) There are many different types of statistics and reports. Where do I go first?

If you want to know:

  • The quantity of Canvas content you’ve created, go to Course Statistics (Questions #2 & 3)
  • When each student last accessed your course, go to People (Question #4)
  • The length of time each student spent in your course, go to People (Question #4)
  • Ungraded assignments for each student, go to Student Interactions Report (Question #4)
  • Information on a specific student (e.g. Did they view and take Quiz #2?), go to Access Report (Question #6)
  • What an overall visual representation of a student’s Canvas usage in your course is, go to Analytics (Question #8)
  • Quiz statistics, go to Quizzes (Question #10)

2) How can I view general Course Statistics?

Go to the desired course and click on Settings. Select Course Statistics on the right-hand side.

3) What information is available in Course Statistics?

Here you can access:

  • Information about the quantity of content you have created
  • Information on the number of assignments submitted by students
  • A list of students who have recently logged into Canvas
  • Information on the number of files you have uploaded

4) How can I view general usage reports about my students?

Go to the desired course and click on People. Here you will find:

  • When each student last accessed your course (called Last Activity)
  • How long each student has been active in your course (called Total Activity)

You can see more information by clicking on the Student Interactions Report on the right-hand side. Here you will see:

  • The last time you interacted with each student in your course (An interaction is classified as any time you email the student within Canvas Inbox or any time you add a comment to a student’s assignment submission)
  • Student grades
  • Ungraded assignments for each student

You can also send an email to individual students directly from this interactions report.

5) How can I view usage reports about specific students?

Go to the desired course and click on People. Then click on the student’s name. In the menu bar on the right-hand side, you can access:

  • The student’s grades
  • The student’s specific interactions report
  • An access report (see Question #6 for more information)
  • Analytics (see Question #8 for more information)

 6) What information is available in a student’s Access Report?

When you go to People, click on the student’s name, and choose Access Report, you will see specific details about how the student has interacted with various content in your Canvas course. The access report will show you:

  • The content the student has accessed/viewed
  • The number of times they viewed the content
  • The number of times they actually participated in that content (e.g. post to a discussion board, submit an assignment, take a quiz, etc.)
  • The last time they viewed that content

7) How can I tell if a student has taken a quiz more than once?

In the student’s Access Report, it will tell you next to the name of the quiz how many times they have participated in the quiz.

8) What information is available in a student’s Analytics?

When you go to People, click on the student’s name, and choose Analytics, you will see a number of graphs*. The information presented here includes:

  • The student’s current grade percentage
  • The number of page views and participations students did on any given day (Hover over the bar to see more information)
  • When the student emailed you within Canvas (represented by an orange icon) and when you emailed the student (represented by a blue icon)
  • The status and grade for each online submission by the student. Hover over each icon for more information. The meaning of the symbols are as follows:
    • Green circle = submitted on time
    • Yellow triangle = submitted late
    • Red square = not submitted
    • White circle = not due yet
  • Where the student’s grades fell within the overall class' grade and the five number summary for the assignment (the range of class grades, the median, and the quartiles)

*Note: Currently, Analytics does not include statistics about activity completed in the Canvas mobile app.

9) Can I view the student’s Analytics as a table rather than a graph?

Yes, you can! Within Analytics, click on the toggle button at the top to change the graphs into tables.
