Configuring your work computer for remote connections
1. Requesting a static IP address
a. Open the Start menu, then type command prompt.
b. Click Command Prompt.
c. Type getmac.
d. Copy or make note of the letters and numbers under Physical Address (ex. 30-65-EC-6F-C4-58). This is the unique MAC address (media access control address) for your machine.
e. Submit a Request/Modify a static IP service request. Choose Computer - Remote Desktop as the Connection/Device Type and provide the MAC address from the previous step, when prompted.
f. Once processed, you will receive an email with your computer's new IP address. Be sure to make a note of this IP address, you will need it later.
g. Restart your computer.
2. Enabling Remote Desktop
a. Open the Start menu, then type remote desktop.
b. Click Remote Desktop Settings.
c. Click the Enable Remote Desktop toggle to On.
d. Click Confirm.
Connecting to your work computer remotely from Windows 10/11
1. Connect to the MSU Employee VPN.
2. Open the Start menu, then type remote desktop.
3. Click Remote Desktop Connection.
4. Type in the IP address of your work computer.
5. Enter ad\NetID (replace NetID with your NetID) as the user name and NetPassword (replace NetPassword with your NetPassword) as the password, when prompted.
6. Click OK, then click Yes at the certificate prompt. You can also check the box for "Don't ask me again for connections to this computer" to prevent being prompted about the certificate in the future.
7. You should be automatically logged in to your work computer and be able to access the desktop, programs, files, etc.
Connecting to your work computer remotely from macOS
1. Download, install, then run the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the App Store
2. Connect to the MSU Employee VPN.
3. Open the Applications folder, then open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
4. Set up a new connection to your work computer (If you've already done this, skip to step 5).
a. Click the + button, then click Add PC.
b. In the PC name field, type in the IP address of your work computer. You can add a friendly name such as "Bully's Work Computer" in the Friendly name field, if desired.
c. Click Add.
5. Double click the IP address/Friendly name of your work computer.
6. Enter ad\NetID (replace NetID with your NetID) as the username and NetPassword (replace NetPassword with your NetPassword) as the password, when prompted.
7. Click Continue, then click Continue at the certificate prompt. You can also click Show certificate, check the box for "Always trust...", then click Continue to prevent being prompted about the certificate in the future.
8. You should be automatically logged in to your work computer and be able to access the desktop, programs, files, etc.
