Cisco AnyConnect VPN: Installing/Connecting to the MSU VPN on Windows

Before you can install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, you will need to add to the list of Trusted Sites within Internet Settings.


1. Click on the Windows Start Button, and click on the Gear for Windows Settings. In the search bar, type in Internet Options.

2. Under Internet Options, click the Security tab. From there, click Trusted Site and then click Sites to
open the Trusted Sites window.

3. In the Trusted Sites window that comes up, do the following:

  1. Uncheck Require server verification for all sites in this zone
  2. Type in the Add this website to the zone field
  3. Click Add.
  4. Click Close.
  5. Click OK at the Internet Properties window. 

Now you can install Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.

1. Go to Login to the website using your NetID and NetPassword.

2. Click on Start AnyConnect.

3. Click on Start AnyConnect VPN - if that does not work click on Download.

4. Once the VPN client is downloaded, run it from your Downloads folder or browser to start the installation wizard.

5. Click Next.

6. Make sure the I accept the terms in the License Agreement option is selected, then click Next.

7. Click Install.

8. Wait for the installation process to finish then click Finish.


1. Go to your Start Menu and open Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

2. If the server field is blank, type in Click on Connect.

3. Choose the options based on your group:

  Students Employees (2FA/DUO required)
Group Student Employee
Username NetID NetID
Password NetPassword NetPassword
DUO Password N/A Type "push" OR get a code from your DUO app (See instructions below)

Additional instructions for Employee group using DUO

To use DUO push: Type push into the DUO password field, then accept the notification on your mobile device.

To use a two-factor passcode:

Mobile Devices:  Open DUO Mobile on your mobile device. Click on Mississippi State University. A six digit code will display. This is what you will type in the Duo Password field.

Key Fobs: Press the button and enter the number from your display

2FA website: Generate a two-factor passcode at (Detailed Instructions)

4. Click OK. Once you see Connection Established, you are connected to the MSU VPN.

1. When you are finished using the VPN you can disconnect by right clicking on the tray icon for Cisco AnyConnect and selecting Disconnect.


2. When you are ready to reconnect to the VPN you can go to your All Apps / Programs and search for Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility and follow the instructions for Connecting to the MSU VPN from the section above.
