BullyMail (Gmail) to O365 Email Migration - Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we changing from BullyMail (Gmail) to O365 Email?

Last fall, MSU's Student Association passed Resolution 11 which supported and requested the change of MSU's student email environment from Gmail to Microsoft Office 365.  The MSU administration approved the request.  This change is scheduled for February 26, 2020. After this upgrade is complete, students, faculty and staff will share the same email platform.

This change affects more than email.  Microsoft Teams and OneDrive are greatly integrated with O365 email.  Since all Students, Faculty, and Staff will be in a single environment, communication and collaboration between and within those groups will be simplified and enhanced.  Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are routinely used by students in their classes.  Other apps, including OneNote and Stream now available.  Additionally, since many enterprise level organizations use the Microsoft Office Suite, our students will be better positioned to start their careers with the tools that they are familiar with.

Will my email address change?

No. Your email address will remain netID@msstate.edu. While the organization that hosts your email will change, the University controls the “msstate.edu” email domain and can move it from one email host to another.

Will I lose access to my BullyMail (Gmail) account?

No. All of the email in your BullyMail (Gmail) account will be copied to your O365 email account. You will be able to access your BullyMail (Gmail) account after the O365 upgrade. No new email will be delivered to your BullyMail (Gmail) account after the upgrade has completed.

Will I lose access to my G Suite account (Google Drive, Google Docs, etc.)?

No. You will still access Google Drive, Google Docs, etc. through the myState portal, Canvas, or from a Gmail login.

Why are we making this change in the middle of a semester?

While the University understands that the middle of a semester seems like a bad time to undertake a change that will affect every student, there was concern that more students would have issues if this change was made during the summer or winter holidays. Most of our students are on campus during the Spring semester and will receive timely notifications of the email change. Additionally, technical support is available from multiple groups on campus. During the summer or winter holidays, many people don’t read their email as frequently and problems would have to be handled remotely.

How do I access my O365 email account?

Access your O365 mailbox by one of the following methods:

  1. Go to the myState portal and click on "Microsoft O365" in the myState pulldown menu.
  2. Point your browser to https://o365.msstate.edu, log in with your netid@msstate.edu email address and NetPassword, and click on the Outlook icon.

Instructions for other email clients including Outlook for Windows or Mac, and mobile devices are available at https://servicedesk.msstate.edu/TDClient/45/Portal/KB/?CategoryID=101.

How do I configure my mobile device to read my O365 email?

If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, you can use either the native email client, the Outlook app, or the "Outlook on the Web" client.

If you’re an Android user, you can use the Outlook app or the "Outlook on the Web" client.

How will I know when the migration is complete?  When do I start using my O365 email account?

A final email message will be sent to your BullyMail (Gmail) account on February 26th notifying you that your email migration is complete. You may access your O365 email account after you receive the BullyMail (Gmail) email notification.

Is Duo required for O365 email?

In O365 email, can I recover a message that is deleted by mistake?

Yes, a deleted message can be recovered up to 90 days.

In O365 email, can I POP or IMAP my email?

No, due to security concerns, specifically the lack of 2FA support, POP and IMAP are not available for O365 email at MSU.
